Four mid-valley residents, including a father and daughter from Albany, were killed Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash along Interstate 5 south of Orland, California and became submerged in the Tehama-Colusa Canal water.
According to the Glenn County Sheriff's Office in California, Jessica Mojica, 17, her father, Jose M. Mojica, 39, her sister, Sandra Gonzalez Mojica, 21, and her boyfriend, Jorge Alejandro Villalobos, 23, and Adrian Soto, Gonzalez Mojica's 3-year-old son were returning to the mid-valley after picking up Adrian, who had been visiting his father in the Los Angeles area.
Sandra Gonzalez Mojica was able to get out of the water and reach an emergency phone box, calling California Highway Patrol at 6:13 a.m.
Jessica, the driver of the vehicle, was pronounced dead in the water.
Also found in the water was Adrian Soto, dead at the scene.
Several hours later, divers located Gonzalez Mojica's boyfriend, and her father, Jose.
Jessica's sister, Sandra Gonzalez Mojica, 21, of Salem, was the lone survivor of the accident. Sandra is a student at Chemeketa Community College.
Jessica is also survived by her mother, Maria, brother Edgar and sister Lupita, all of Albany.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
