Man Suing City To Help Him Pay Damages Related To Accident

January 6, 2006

Calaveras County is being tapped by a Murphys man who wants it to help him pay damages because he says that the county road has a blind curve

According to the lawsuit filed on October 28th, Steven W. Snowden was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of a Sonora musician. He is being ordered to pay damages to the man's family and wants the city to help him pay these.

The accident occurred on June 22nd, 2004 and resulted in the death of Kenneth J. Darby, 47, a musician with the Black Irish Band. Darby was riding a motorcycle on French Gulch Road near Murphys when he crashed head-on into Snowdon's Dodge pickup as they came around a blind curve.

According to police, both men were in the middle of the narrow road as they went around the turn.

Snowdon was the recipient of a lawsuit filed by Darby's family, claiming that he should be liable in the wrongful death of Darby.

As a result of the lawsuit, Snowdon filed his against the county saying that the county did not maintain safe conditions on their roads and should be held liable for part of the accident.

The county counsel will attempt to have Snowden's case rejected when it comes to that table, but then Snowden will be able to formally file a lawsuit against the county.

Although the county spokesman was not able to discuss details of the case, he did agree that Calaveras County was full of blind curves.

A spokesman from the county said that with the common knowledge that the roads have blind curves, citizens are simply expected to use more caution.
